The journey of this exquisite pashmina shawl begins with the collection of raw pashmina wool from Mr. Tsering's private herd of Changthani goats in Koyul village, Kashmir. This pristine fiber undergoes a meticulous process, starting with washing, carding, and dehairing. De-hairing is a delicate handcrafting step where the coarse guard hair is painstakingly removed, leaving only the finest pashmina fibers. The use of machines is avoided to preserve the fiber's integrity.
The resulting baby-soft pashmina is then skillfully hand-spun in Kashmir, a traditional craft that produces an exceptionally fine and unbroken yarn. The yarn's thickness ranges from 110 to 140 English count, a feat impossible to replicate with machines without the aid of a 'carrier fiber.' This labor-intensive stage exemplifies the dedication to producing the finest pashmina.
Next, the fine yarn makes its way to Srinagar, where a skilled artisan weaves it into this shawl. Crafting with eco-toosh yarn, characterized by its shorter fibers, demands extra care and delicacy. Mohd. Shabbir, using a pit handloom, dedicates approximately a month to create this beautiful fabric. The thread used for weaving is dyed in Hawal Srinagar, enhancing the shawl's vibrancy.
The intricate embroidery, executed in the classic Sozni style, is a testament to the craftsmanship of Javed Ahmed, working in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir. This painstaking handwork spans over 30 days, adding a touch of timeless elegance to the shawl.
To ensure its perfection, the shawl undergoes its final stages at the 'finishing plant' in Hawal, where Mr. Zakir Wani meticulously washes and finishes the fabric, preparing it for dispatch. This entire journey culminates in a shawl that epitomizes Kashmir's rich textile heritage and artistry.
The spinning, weaving, dyeing, and embroidery were accomplished by skilled craftspeople.
